Contests


AMV Contest
This has proven to be one of the most popular events year in and year out. Creators select scenes from various anime shows, set them to music, and edit and splice them until an amazing music video is born. Come out and vote for your favourites!

Anime Jeopardy
Anime Jeopardy returns for its third year! If you’ve ever wanted to test your knowledge for fun and prizes or have an opportunity to prove how much of an otaku you really are, now’s your chance. Contestants will be chosen from the audience and will compete for the right to be called “The Ultimate Anime Jeopardy Champion”. Questions range from details of your favourite series, facts about their production companies, and even knowledge about the history of anime itself. And even if you’re not interested in participating, it’s a great time to come and watch and cheer on your fellow otaku.

Anime Swimsuit Contest (18+)
Come see the anime swimsuit contest. This contest has been hugely successful in the past and is sure to be a highlight this year. Contestants will compete in 3 rounds (Intro, talents, Q&A) while in anime themed swimsuits of their choice. Yahoooo!

Cosplay Contest
Come and check out some fantastic cosplayers and skits in this fun-filled event. Cosplayers perform skits or a simple walk on to show off their cosplay for your pleasuere and amusement and maybe win some prizes along the way. Be sure to cheer for your favourite performers on their way to victory.

Cosplay PJ Contest
It’s party time! Come one, come all to the Cosplay Pajama Party. Come for Contests, Games and Lawlz! After all, what’s a PJ party without games? Come check it out, and don’t forget your teddy bears!

DIY Vinyl Toy Painting Contest
Compete against your peers for a chance at artistic glory. Contestants will be provided with a blank DIY vinyl toy to paint to the extent of their imagination. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges. Sponsored by Metropolis Comics & Toys, and Thick Magazine.

Fan Art Contest
Join us on Friday to meet the judges and find out the rules, theme, and where and when to submit your art for this year’s fan art contest! Then, come back on Sunday for a review of the submitted art, and the winners announcement!

The Gauntlet
A new Anime Evolution exclusive gaming event is upon us! If you believe yourself a true gamer, you’re not going to want to miss this. Have a silly voice? A spectacular imitation? Do you want yours to be the best of the best? Then put it to the test with Curtis “Takahata101″ Arnott in this grueling tournament of one on one voice duels! Or just show up to have a few cheap laughs.

Worst Cosplay Contest
Finally, a competition for the hot glue king, the true mage of cardboard, and that guy who believes everything should be made out of duct tape. Bring your closet cosplays and that original raver anbu you have been saving for just such an occasion. Contestants will battle it out in three terrifiying rounds to find out who is “The Worst of the Mediocre”. Brought to you by the Spanish Inquisition.

Academie Duello
Academie Duello is a school of European Swordplay and Western Martial Arts devoted to teaching the weapons of the historical gentleman and warrior. Come get a sample of what their training is like including sword arts such as the rapier and sidesword.

AE Comic Jam
The AE Comic Jam provides an opportunity for comic artists to meet and socialize, creating a unique experience and furthering the sense of community. Participants each take a turn drawing a panel before handing the page off to another artist. The result is a collaborative story, built by several artists. All comics will be displayed on the AE Website following the convention.

All Star Amateur Live Dub
Join the collective members of Team Four Star, Loading Ready Run, and Synaptic Chaos Theatre as they take turns ‘Live Dubbing’ random video clips on the spot for your amusement. Warning: You might have too much fun.

Anime Evolution Olympics
Show off your competitive spirit and athletic abilities in the Anime Evolution Olympics! Test your strength, accuracy and brain power. Who will be Anime Evolution’s golden champion?

Anime Idol
Come check out some aspiring new performers in the Anime Idol contest. In this event, contestants will perform musical pieces for the enjoyment of the audience and will hope to please the judges to make it to the next round.

Assassin and Target Game
Each person to show up for the event will be given a set of tags they are labelled either as “Target”, “Assassin”, or “Templar”. The only way to kill someone is for the assassins to whisper, “Rest in Peace” in the ear of a known target, so only they can hear it. Who will survive and who will fall?

Come and close off the convention with us and LoadingReadyRun. Be there as we say goodbye to Anime Evolution 2010 and our guests and watch us welcome in Anime Evolution 2011.

Charity Auction

Have you ever wanted to be served by a cute maid that calls you ‘Master’? The Cosplay Café has adapted the ever popular maid cafe in Japan to give you a chance to experience being served by cute servers in cosplay. Enjoy a nice cool drink and a delicious snack after a long day at the convention at the Cosplay Café!

Final Fantasy Fight Tournament
Anime Evolution is proud to present the return of the annual Final Fantasy Fight tournament! This competition is open to any group of three cosplayers who want to show off the fighting moves of their characters in competition against other cosplayers. Live Manga Reading
We provide the manga; you provide the voices. Try your hand at acting and improv at this high energy event. Members of the audience are asked to come up front and act out short scenes from various manga. Try out new voices, adlib lines, and poke fun at your favourite manga.

Lolita Fashion Show
In a world of contradictions, lovers of lolita style are united by a single, common thread – a passion for whimsy and fantasy. With countless sub-styles like gothic, sweet, classic, punk and sailor, this fashion has something for everyone. At the Lolita Fashion Show you will see examples of all the major sub-styles, as worn by fans both new to the style and long time lovers.

Man Cooking LIVE! (18+)
It’s live Man Cooking with Loading Ready Run’s Morgan and Alex! HAA! At this panel, we will prove that even frail, pasty instant ramen can be harassed, sculpted and buffed up to become HEARTY MAN CHOW! Remember, if your moe body pillow likes your cooking, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!

Masquerade Ball
Get ready for an evening of elegance. You are cordially invited to the official Masquerade Ball 2010. Come learn how to ballroom dance, reminisce through some of the more graceful moments of anime and enjoy some live music. Formal wear required. Admission is $5 for those not preregistered.

Oldies, But Goodies!
Back in the days when anime was good… or was it? Sure there are classics that everybody recalls with fond memories of early nerdery. This panel is not for those shows. Dust off your VCR. Todd Haberkorn is going to bring out some of the shows that are best left forgotten and give it the MST3K treatment.

Sans the AM/FM
Join Todd Haberkorn as he presents a re-enactment of an old-time radio show. Take the part of a character yourself, or sit and experience the hilarity of it all.

Tea ceremony by the Urasenke Foundation of Vancouver
Experience an authentic Japanese tea ceremony in the Nitobe Gardens, a traditional Japanese Tea and Stroll garden considered to be the one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America and among the top five Japanese gardens outside of Japan. Slots are limited so sign up early on Friday at the Information Booth. (Saturday only at 1, 2, 3 and 4pm)

Vancity Soran Dance
Come watch the energetic traditional Japanese dance, Yosakoi Soran which combines Yosakoi-Festival in Kochi prefecture of Shikoku Island and Soran Music of Hokkaido Island.

4chan has gone from an obscure website to an integral part of the global anime community in the span of only a few years. This panel will focus on the history of 4chan itself, internet memes, and in true chaotic nature, random members from the audience will be selected to join the panel based on their knowledge. So, if you lurked around when Duckroll, Caturday, or Rage Guy were still new, then the odds of you being selected as a panelist are high. Bringing a V for Vendetta mask to this panel is also encouraged.

A Parent’s Guide to Anime and Manga

Robots and Animating the Inanimate: USA & Japan
Robotics, and other forms of animated inanimate things increasingly become facts of life in the advanced post-industrial societies. For some this is promising, and deeply disturbing for others. Although widespread in manufacturing, new breeds of robots are already proliferating and doing more than spraying paint on car doors. This presentation explores how the two very different values-sets of the USA and Japan affect R&D and are subsequently expressed by animation of the inanimate. Why are Japanese Cyborgs Always Female: Gender and the Posthuman in Japanese Animation
In the robot, android or cyborg body, sex and gender are constructed and unnecessary rather than biological and functional; nonetheless, most depictions of such posthuman entities retain gender and sex markers. This presentation explores the reasons behind this phenomenon in recent Japanese anime films such as Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis.

Amigurumi Crochet Workshop
Amigurumi is the Japanese craft of creating stuffed dolls or toys. This workshop provides participants with the tools, supplies and resources to learn the basic stitch, how to read a pattern and start their very own Amigurumi crochet project. Previous experience is not necessary, however this is a hands on workshop so come prepared to tangle with yarn and get to work!

Analyzing Cosplay

Vocaloid 101
An introduction to the world of Vocaloid and the Vocaloid 2 editor, featuring an in-depth look at the culture that surrounds it, as well as a demonstration of how to create a basic Vocaloid track. Miku Hatsune will be singing lead, with the Kagamine twins as her backups, and of course Luka and Gakupo will be making brief appearances.

Wig Styling
From wig maintenance to extreme spikes, this panel has something for you. We will teach you the basic skill sets required to achieve that gravity defying hair and avoid the “dear god what is that thing?” look. Be sure to come with questions for the Q&A after the panel.

7 Aztec Samurai

Anima Game Demo
This will be a demonstration game of Anima, a fantasy-based anime themed game. You will have an opportunity to play a character in the world of Gaia.

Blood+ Game
Saya, a Kuei Jin who was genetically created, has a chevalier protector who is also a Kuei Jin and a group of friends who are all secretly members of the Exalted (although some don’t know it). Saya, in Okinawa, plans to look into the machinations of another Kuei Jin named Deva. Deva plans to hold a concert soon in Tokyo, but there is also another group called the Schiff who are genetically created Kuei Jin who are looking for a cure for a disease called The Thorn.

Bubblegum Crisis
Do you wanna be a knight saber? You’ve heard that they’re giving tryouts behind Hot Legs but that there’s a series of obstacles and tests you must pass. If you’ve got the right stuff though you can take on rogue boomers with the help of the other Knight Sabers.

Camarilla LARP
Interested in live action gaming? We are part of an international gaming organization dedicated to the enjoyment of the fictional worlds created by White Wolf Publishing. Once your self-made character is defined, you dress up like him or her, as if you were acting in a theatre play. After entering the game proper, you act in line with your character’s motivations and capabilities to the best of your ability, but you have no written lines: you must improvise while using your predefined character as a guideline.

Casual Gaming
Happening all weekend long in its’ own 24hr gaming room, this is the place for you when you’re between panels! Come try out that new game you just bought from the dealer’s room, or join a running game and make some new friends (and then crush them with your gaming skill!). There will be a selection of games on hand provided by AE community members and the UBC Wargamers Club. During set times throughout the convention, there will be avid gamers on hand to teach any game they know to any who wish to learn.

Cosplay Chess
Ever wonder what it would be like to watch your favourite characters battle it out? In the battle for the ultimate chess otaku; heroes, villains, and the ones who just don’t give a damn will battle it out. Who will dominate the anime world?

Cthulutech
This is a game which takes place in a futuristic setting in which the Old Ones have returned and are assaulting a New Earth Government which is being defended by Evangelion-esque type mecha. The game is sort of modern day Cthulu mixed with mecha anime type situations. Your setting is that you are a team working for the Federal Security Bureau working as part of the Sectarian Crimes Division investigating occult activity.

Demon City Shinjuku
A group of foreign exchange students visiting Japan again find that some strange supernatural occurrences are taking place near a Junior high School in the Shinjuku area of town. There may be an evil homunculus involved and a local moon priestess is looking into matters surrounding continuing disturbances of a portal like nature near the Tokyo Towers.

Final Sanction
The planet of Avalos is in the grip of the dreaded Xenos, only you; the mighty warriors of the Deathwatch, can strike at the heart of the alien infestation and purge this blight from the world. For the Emperor this world shall not fall! Using the quckstart rules for the forthcoming Deathwatch RPG from Fantasy Flight games, Final Sanction is an action heavy romp through an ancient and destroyed city overrun with violent rebels, infected warriors and vile aliens. Save the planet by getting word of the infestation off world, save the city by burning out the heart of the creatures hive.

Jail Break
The sessions start out in prison. Will you be a prisoner or someone else. Only by staying on your toes and staying calm will everything work out OK. A role-playing heavy game.

Keep on the Shadowfell
An introductory 4th Edition D&D adventure. The town of Winterhaven stands watch over a ruined keep that was once a bastion of good in the realm. This keep overlooks the Shadow Rift, a dark scar in the world that was once a gateway to the Shadowfell but has been dormant for many years. Now, an evil cleric of Orcus, Demon Lord of the Undead, seeks to re-open the gate, and the only thing standing in his way is a small yet determined band of heroes.

Mage Dark Fantasy Anime Game
Bring or make a Mage character (preferably from the Traditions) who spends half his time in a spirit world based on any popular anime world you want. You can also make your favourite anime character as a Mage in San Francisco based Mage world setting in which tensions are high between the Technocracy, the Marauders and the Nephandi (groups in the Mage game generally perceived as enemies). (Build a character at the game or bring one in you’ve made years previously)

Magic the Gathering
There will be Magic the Gathering booster drafts once again at the convention sponsored by Craving for a Game. These will be both sanctioned and unsanctioned events organized by DCI Core Coordinator Mikal Peterson. Booster Drafts will be $10. There will also be an unsanctioned booster draft sponsored by Metropolis Comics and Toys with no entry fee.

Merry Band of Adventurers
Come and take part in a merry band of adventures. Heroics and smarts will be needed. 4th level pre-generated characters will be provided.

Noir vs. Madlax
The professional teams of ‘Noir’ and ‘Madlax’ are trying to find the pages of the Elda Taluda in the jungles of Southeast Asia, a missing book. Which team will reach it first and will Madlax and Noir work together to accomplish their respective missions.

Pathfinder Society
Once the home to a cult preaching self-sacrifice by immolation in order to achieve paradise, the Citadel of Flame in Qadira’s Meraz Desert was presumably wiped out decades ago after Sarenrae dervishes led a crusade to end its morbid message. An enormous sandstorm swallowed both the citadel and the army attacking it, burying both beneath hundreds of feet of sand. Thought lost forever, the citadel’s rediscovery prompts the Pathfinder Society to send you deep in the unforgiving Meraz to finally close the book on Qadira’s most mysterious cult. Return to the Temple of the Lava Bears

Savaged Temple

In this Aztec inspired adventure you must take to the jungle as your city’s most honorable warriors, and stop these evil ancient creatures from bringing the wrath of their dark god to bear against the people of the jungle. Can you stand against the vile monsters? Do you have what it takes to free your people from a life of darkness? The Savage Worlds system is a fun “rules medium” set of mechanics; great for those new to RPGs as well as seasoned veterans. PG-13 Violence, mature themes (sacrifice).

Strange Days
“Strange Days” resolves around a small community which suddenly suffers a huge amount of unnatural events and strange visions. The secret society known as the New Inquisition sends-in a team of agents to investigate.

Tank Police
The Tank Police are called on to respond to a hostage crisis situation. But all is not as it appears. Mere tanks may not be enough.

Trindam’s Pass
In the town of ‘Trindam’s Pass’ the goddess ‘Melora’ has been forsaken. Marauder’s have taken over her temple and transformed it to revere the evil god ‘Torog, the King that Crawls’. For many long nights villagers have attempted to reclaim their lost goddess’s temple, but their siege has yielded no results. Each night more civilians disappear and screams echo from the necropolis beneath the church. In an act of desperation the townsfolk have called for adventurers to aid them in their plight. The villagers have requested anyone willing to help to meet at the ‘Mage’s Slippers Inn’, one of the last remaining areas of the town left unmarked by ‘Torog’ and his bandits.

Touhou Project
An introductory look into one of Japan’s largest game series and the massive fan culture surrounding it. After the presentation, enjoy a photo shoot for all the Touhou cosplayers in attendance followed by open gaming.

The Werewolves of Millers Hollow
Deep in the countryside, the little town of Millers Hollow has recently been infiltrated by Werewolves. Each night, murders are committed by the townsfolk, who due to come mysterious phenomenon (possibly the greenhouse effect) have become Werewolves. It is now time to take control and eliminate this ancient evil, before the town loses its last few inhabitants.

Whose Line is it Anime?
Based on the popular improv TV show “Who’s Line is it Anyway?”, this game is all about audience participation. Audience members will be called upon to jump up and show us what kind of spontaneous behaviour is deep inside.

Wizards of the Coast Convention League
If you’re looking for a way to spend your down time at the convention, join the league. The Wizards of the Coast, Magic the Gathering Convention League will run all weekend. For just $10 you will be given enough cards to create a deck to play with other league players. Play different opponents and record your wins or losses and turn your results into the league facilitator. Participants will receive Magic: The Gathering cards win or lose (while supplies last). The top 8 players will be eligible for additional prizes at the end of the league play on Sunday. Participants may add cards received during the convention into their deck. Register once, then play all weekend long!

During the panel, we will first talk about the visual novel from Tomo Kataoka, then introduce PROJECT NARCISSU, a doujin movie we’ve been working on.
